What are CAFOs?
CAFO stands for concentrated animal feeding operation. Within CAFOs, animals, feed, manure, urine, dead animals, and production operations are all together in a small area. Animals are treated very poorly due to the inhumane practices that take place. CAFOs can be inside or outside; Inside, manure and contaminants collect on the floor and water is used to wash them away. Outdoors, waste collects on the ground, and rain washes it away into nearby bodies of water, contaminating them. Wastewater can also leach into groundwater, contaminating drinking water. In addition, because animals are kept in such close quarters, disease spreads easily, which can be transferred to humans, and causes an increased use of antibiotics.

Cattle Feed Specifics
One way to make cattle feed in particular more sustainable is by increasing feed efficiency. Feed efficiency is measured by residual feed intake (RFI). This is the difference between an animal’s actual and predicted feed intake, both dry matter and energy. RFI is also independent of both growth and body size.
