Outdoors, waste collects on the ground, and rain washes it away into nearby bodies of water, contaminating them. Wastewater can also leach into groundwater, contaminating drinking water. In addition, because animals are kept in such close quarters, disease spreads easily, which can be transferred to humans, and causes an increased use of antibiotics.
